RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
