Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
