Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
